Andy Douglas was born in Brazil to missionary parents, and travel and spiritual practice have shaped his life ever since. The Curve of the World: Into the Spiritual Heart of Yoga tells the story of his transformative journey of contemplative practice, stretching across several decades and continents.

The Iowa City-based author worked as a yogic monk in Asia in the 1980s, and this literary memoir draws connections between spirituality and social justice, music and devotion. And, as the author eventually faced serious illness, the book explores the link between body, mind and spirit.

Douglas holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Iowa, where he was the recipient of the Marcus Bach Fellowship for Writing about Religion and Culture. He is active in peace, economic justice and prison issues, and has sung in a choir with prisoners. The author translates and sings Bengali devotional songs. And, he is active in the Community Sing movement.

Tim Bascom, author of Chameleon Days, states, “This book chronicles the journey of one American soul willing to risk everything in search of a more meaningful and satisfying experience. It will bump you out of the well-worn ruts of status quo religion, taking you to places you’ve never been before.”
